On the mainland you often cover longer distances. On the islands it is more about short trips, spontaneous outings and the connection between harbour, beach and town. What works best depends not only on your budget, but also on how you like to travel.

Getting around on the Greek mainland

The mainland is ideal for road trips. If you want to explore several regions, a rental car is usually the most flexible option. It makes it easy to reach small towns, remote beaches and rural areas. In places where public transport is limited, having your own vehicle is a big advantage.

If you prefer to travel in a more relaxed and budget friendly way, buses are a good alternative. Many cities and larger towns are reliably connected. For journeys between major centres this is often all you need, as long as you do not plan to visit very remote spots.

In cities, however, a car or scooter is not always practical. Heavy traffic, narrow streets and the search for parking can become tiring. For short distances, taxis, public transport or walking are often the better choice.
